Matt

Glad to see you made it to Moab safely. Too bad about the CJ. Have a good time.

Also, you might want to check out The Pickle. ITs not very long, and it only has a a few obstacles, but its definitely worth the time it takes to do it.

Re: Must do Moab trails?

Pritchett Canyon is generally considered the toughest OFFICIAL trail in Moab. By official, I mean run by Red Rock 4-wheelers during safari time. It is definitely worth the run if you are looking for some tougher stuff. Just about everything in BFE is tougher than that, though. You will definitely find things you can't get up.
Moab Rim is another short must-do. The obstacles are good, and the proximity of the drop-off down to the road can really get the 'ol pucker factor in use.

Hells Revenge is just classic Moab, though. There is not much on it that is super tough and all the tougher stuff is bypassable so just about any 4WD vehicle can run it.

Hope the rest of your trip rocks!

Thanks Mary! Bruce and Mike were disappointed their Jeep broke on the first day, but we were able to make do with what we had.

We ran:
Fins and things
Poison Spider/Golden Spike/Golden ?????
Metal Masher
Hells Revenge

I ran just about every stupid line I could find and most of them I could do. Widowmaker and Rock Crusher I couldnt do, mainly due to wheelbase and front suspension (I did go down Rock Crusher though)

Hells Revenge was interesting, I did Hells Gate, and almost got Mickys hot tube (held up by wheelbase and front suspension yet again), and got halfway up Escalator before I broke a steering box bolt.

Good week of wheeling, tons of great views, met some really cool people and had a blast. Minus the breakage of my friends CJ, and my steering box bolt, I was happy with my limited amount of carnage considering how hard I was beating on it.

Did Mike have 1 piece axles? or did he still have splined hubs in his AMC20?

They have one piece Superior shafts, with an Eaton E locker.

It was an rather odd break. Mike tried a silly little stair step, didnt make it, backed off, tried another, didnt make it and backed off, and right as he started the third attempt it just went "pop."

Nothing huge or climatic, but more of a clap of your hands. Took the driveshaft off and was able to turn the pinion by hand and figure it was a pinion gear. Got back to camp and pulled the cover. Ring gear, pinion gear and locker seemed to be fine, and we think we remember a similar "pop" earlier in the day so looking back its possible both rear shafts are broken. Both breaks were on small ledges, 6'' maybe with a 10% incline behind it that we still dont know how they managed to break both shafts.

XJ's have a good wheelbase for Rock Chucker, Widow Maker, and Micky's hot tub. It sounds like you just needed a different spotter.

The people I was with didnt really know how to spot me, and so I was sort of on my own.

My main issues were my radius arms in the front kept unloading and not providing any traction, and my stock rear bumper which kept hanging up on things preventing my rear tires getting to the walls.

So those things combined wouldnt allow me to get up?
