Hi all,

I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 5 speed that is giving me problems. My friends say that If I can find the problem then I can probably fix it with my friends help or by my self being said it is easy enough, My friends are all mechanics and are above average with Jeeps. I would just send it away to my mechanic but I want to be able to fix my own Jeep if its not to hard, Plus there wont always be a mechanic available when I go wheeling and what not. Also, should this help the Jeep was family owned first purchased by the father then sold it to his son, Its only been owned by 2 people but of the same family, I am the third owner, not family.

Here are the problems:

1. Pedal brakes are not working but the hand brake works like a charm.

2. 4WD does not work.

Let me go in depth in both problems for a bit.

Brakes

1. When I was first looking at the Jeep before I bought it the previous owner said the it would need new brakes in the rear. About a month or so the Jeeps brakes were in good condition but it started to show its age and the brakes started to show signs of replacement, Or so I thought. I finally purchased new brake shoes and brake pads and I was ready to put them on. Well, When I was ready to put the new pads and shoes on I saw that both the rear and the front brakes were still at 50% and less. So, I did not replace them instead my friend suggests that it might be the Brake Power Booster. So, I have a friend who says that the Brake Power Booster is shot and another friend things that I don't have brake fluid in the Master Cylinder and another friend says that I have air in the lines and another says my brake lines are crimped somewhere or that I have a leak somewhere.

Well I don't think I have a leak somewhere because my master cylinder is full of brake fluid in fact I filled it the day we thought it was out of fluid. Also when I step on the brake pedal I do not see any puddles of brake fluid anywhere where the Jeep sits. I may have air in the line because when we took off the tires we saw that one brake caliper was missing the bleeding attachment that is used to bleed the brakes. The reason my friend says its the brake power booster is because when I press the brake pedal down it makes a loud hissing noise whenever I push the pedal either slow or fast it makes the hissing sound. One weird thing is that when we bleed on the drivers left front tire the brakes came back full force when the Jeep was off but when the Jeep was turned on I pressed the brake pedal and it did the hissing noise and it was the same as before straight to the floor. My step dad looked at the fluid in the master cylinder and said that the fluid in there looked almost a "sandy' color. Not sure what that means but I don't think that's a good sign.

So I'm at a loss as to what it could be. If it is the brake power booster how hard it is to put one in and what would I need? Maybe new brake fluid and a bucket to drain old fluid.

Four Wheel Drive

2. So, My 4wd does not work and I'm not sure why, I checked the vacuum lines and everything is in good working order. When I pull the lever for the 4wd it goes in to the selected mode but the "Part Time" light does not turn on. It makes a grinding noise when I move front or backward when its in 4wd mode but the front tires do not spin on their own. I have a friend who tells me that the linkage might be stretched or misaligned and because of that its not engaging correctly. If that is the case then how would I fix that?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day (once around here - I use 24-hour analogue clocks.)

Either I'm a hardcore social libertarian, or I just don't care - but I can't see what all the kerfuffle is about WRT homosexual couples getting married. Doesn't bother me a whit.

It's been said that they'll end up having short marriages - but what about Hollywood? What about Kim Kardashian?

And, if a couple of guys want to link up, or a couple of girls want to do so, how does it affect my own marriage?

Besides, if it's all about religion, what's stopping them from forming their own church and obviating the argument? "The Firtht Thurtcth of Jethuth Chritht" (sorry, I couldn't help it. Read it out loud with the lisp - the gays I know thinks that's just funny as Hell!) "Gay Christianity" would make more sense to me than "Scientology," and it's not any odder than anything else that came down the pike...

(Sorry, I didn't catch the long link before I copypasta'd. Link's down bottom.)

Could someone tell me why sterilisation isn't an option for these people? It's not like it's a mystery what causes kids, y'know...

He was trying to get a break on the 21 he already had and ended up with nine more while the court was deciding?!?!?

Seriously, what's wrong with these people?

As a judge, I'd be inclined to say the following:

"Ladies, your children will be removed from you and placed into foster care. You are all remanded into temporary custody, long enough to have a laparoscopic tubal ligation performed and to allow you to recover. All of you should be free to resume your lives within a month. The tubal ligation operations and maintenance of your bills will end up being far less expensive to us in the long run.

"Sir, I don't know what's going on in your head, and I honestly don't care. You are also remanded into temporary custody, pending castration. Vasectomies, as you may be aware, have been known to spontaneously reverse themselves. I expect that you should be free to resume your life within two weeks, once it is confirmed that you are fully sterile.

"Under State law, I cannot order you to stop having children. However, I can order you to be prevented from having children, and you obviously don't have the brains required to put a condom to use.

"I had considered total emasculation or possibly full gender nullification, sir, in your case. However, I expect that you should recover much more quickly from castration, and this reduces the costs to the State.

"I don't know what's wrong with you people, and I don't care. You continue to make mistakes, then expect us to pay for it and to save you from the consequences of your actions or inactions. By taking these actions, I am effectively preventing you from having negative consequences, but I am also preventing future expense and complication.

"Considering that you're not bothering to keep track of your children, I expect that nearly any home that these children may be placed into by the foster care system will be more attentive and loving than you are. It is my hope that most - if not all - of these children should actually be adopted, instead of merely fostered.

"It is important for you people to realise that you are not being placed under arrest - my order will reflect that you are in custody for your protection. Therefore, no criminal record should ensue - yet.

"However, I will also be dropping any public benefits you may be currently receiving to reflect the fact that you have only yourselves to support, and you will have six months to secure gainful employment. If you should require jobs training, this will be arranged for you.

"You have obviously misunderstood the purpose of social welfare - it's not to support people using unearned income for their entire lives, but to provide short-term assistance for people when they're down on their luck - if they haven't been able to plan ahead. I somehow would not be surprised to find out you people were not the first generation of your families to be supported by the public.

"Bailiffs, please remove these people and place them in custody. Inform the sheriff that my written order will follow within 48 hours, and I expect a plan for how it is to be implemented with 48 hours after that - I'd like these people to bet able to get on with their lives within thirty days.

(Alternatively - BAN HAMMER!)

sorry - reading stuff like this makes me cranky. I just wish I was in a position to actually do something about it - but people like me don't get elected to positions where that's possible.

EDIT - OK, the system shortened the link. In the window, it took up five lines...

I installed my sye yesterday but the driveshaft I got from the junkyard is way too long. I got a front shaft from the front of a 94 v8 grand Cherokee. 33" collapsed, and it doesn't even fit fully compressed. Everything I read online said that shaft should work with my drivetrain setup, but I guess not!

So I have two options:
- have the shaft shortened by a driveline shop
- find someone with a shaft 31-32" long (collapsed) that's for sale.

Does anybody have a shaft that fits those specs?

Does anybody know of a good driveline shop in the east bay area? Any idea how much this will set me back?

I found a list of driveshaft lengths from different grand Cherokees, but the only ones that are the right length are in zj's with rare setups  looks like these are my only options.

Stoopid jeep isn't drivable till I get this figure out :gag:

I was driving home the other day and the jeep ran fine. Parked it for around 30 minutes and went to move it and it had hell starting. It turned over fine just wouldnt fire. I got it to fire and drove it about 2 miles. Idle shuttered, no power, engine stumbled, and a strange odor could be smelled inside. The further I drove the more it lost power, especially from a stop. I started it up today and there was a strong fuel smell comming from the tail pipe. I did a complete tune up 2 months ago.(plugs, wires, fuel filter, ford 5.0 injectors, cleaned throttle body) 2 weeks ago I flushed the cooling system, replaced the thermostat and radiator cap. I bought the jeep back in January so im not sure of the service history. It has always idled a little rough, just thought it was the IAC valve.
I am looking for any ideas on where i should start to diagnose this. This is my daily driver so I am needing some help.
I really don't want to as I love my rig...but lets face it, how many of you have seen me out on the trails recently? The cost of wheeling + driving it is slowly out-weighing other things I have going on.

That said I'm trying to figure out what I'll ask for it all, and if I can ultimately find a suitable replacement vehicle and get the cash I need to make it all worth it. So what would you pay?

I was thinking $5k as a minimum, but I'd like to get closer to $8k...obviously there's a fine line between wanting and getting.

I bought this '88 XJ limited 2 door (with sunroof) not quite 3 years ago now and built it up, a good chunk of the parts on it were bought then but some came from my last rig (built ~5 years ago).
I've done fluid all the way around the Jeep over the last 2K miles or so (including new tranny filter), and new u-joint on the rear DS. It currently has an intermittent clunk I've been chasing down, somewhere in the drivetrain (my bet was the tranny flush took care of it, but I'm not betting on it yet). The trackbar needs a new bushing, and the passenger door is smashed in an inch or two (might need to be pulled out a little to fit the replacement door - still opens though as is). Otherwise it runs great. She's never left me stranded since 'completing' the build.

P.S. I'm not necessarily selling it, but I am preparing for that as a possibility.

Detroit locker
Yukon 4.56 gears
new drums, pads, hardware, new brake lines
Solid Diff cover
Jks Low profile shock mounts
Comes with e-brake cables

$700

HP Dana 30 housing wire brushed (no gears but have a set read further down)

-comes with new upper control arm bushings
-napa upper camber ball joints 1* tack welded on..was done very carefully
-Does not come with knuckles but i have other sets
-Can include extra shafts if you want

Bad:
DS lower control arm bracket cracked on one side all the way up and half the way on the other side I re-welded it was driving around fine and wheeled fine with it...strong...welded the inside and outside of the mount as well as the top..no issues with caster or any angles made sure it was done right

No lower ball joints

Without knuckles/shafts- $70
With knuckles and shafts-$120

Dana 30 4.56 ring and pinion for a HP30 was installed in the D30 above but when I removed them plans changed and I did not re install them
asking $90 carrier included as well

If you buy the front D30 with everything included the 4.56s I'll let it go for
$190 OBO

Needs new bearings and seals

If I can sell both axles together as a package set I'd let them go for $840

I have blue top 24lb injectors in a new motor atm and it barely even starts with the fuel regulator backed all the way off lol. i dont see how 21lbs to 24lb would make that big a difference if it was true.
